Mission statement

Free the Bears is an international animal welfare and wildlife conservation organization established in 1995 to protect threatened bears throughout Asia. Free the Bears works with governments and non-governmental partners to strengthen and enforce national wildlife protection laws, improve environmental awareness amongst key stakeholders and promote sustainable livelihoods for communities that previously relied on the exploitation of bears and other wildlife. With more than 1,000 bears rescued over the past 30 years, and operations established in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam, Free the Bears sanctuaries play a vital role in combatting illegal wildlife trade and serve as training centers to build capacity for conservation in one of the world’s most threatened biodiversity hotspots.
