Project aims
Establish and implement a survey method for assessing the local population status of the Yellow-breasted Bunting, including its wintering habitats
Engage local farmers in the conservation of the Yellow-breasted Bunting and its habitat
Results
Conducted a monthly surveys of Yellow-breasted Bunting at nine lakes in the wetlands of Pokhara over 7 months
The total count of Yellow-breasted Bunting at each lake each month showed: (1) the distribution of the species in the wetlands of Pokhara; (2) a seasonal pattern in presence of the species during winter months, with peak occurrence in March; no occurrence in September; and monthly average individuals count of 270 individuals
The overall trend highlights that the Yellow-breasted Bunting depends on Pokhara’s wetlands primarily from late autumn to early spring
Conducted an evaluation of the spatial and temporal extent of reed loss / harvesting practices and analyse trends in harvesting activities over the 7-month project and local sustainability uses of reeds, showing: (1) Reed loss / harvesting starts in September and was highest in October and lowest in March; (2) a spatial variations in reed loss across the wetlands; (3) Fencing is the primary purpose for reed use, lasting mostly up to 10 months only.
Introduction of alternative fencing material with bamboo to local farmers relying on reeds: A total of 125 farmers, one from each household, were each provided with 10 bamboo saplings to plant on their private land (expected to reach maturity within 3-4 years)
