Survey and monitoring population of the Flores Hawk-Eagle in Mbeliling Landsacpe, East Nusa Tenggara, Flores Island

Project aims

  • Locate, monitor and safeguard nests

  • Identify the main threats

  • Train the local community to identify raptors as well as how to recognise, identify, and monitor existing threats

  • Develop a small-scale chicken farm to support eagle feeding and to reduce poultry predation within affected local communities

Results

  • Conducted Flores Hawk-eagle nest searches at 32 observation points in 25 sites in the Mbeliling Landscape and other protected areas in the Nusa Tenggara island: 15 new Flores Hawk-eagle nests were recorded during the survey with seven showing signs of successful use in the previous breeding season

  • Identified habitat characteristics where Flores Hawk-eagle nests were found

  • Identified main threats to the Flores Hawk-eagle nest as forest clearance for agriculture expansion and hunting the species considered as a pest (preying on domestic chickens)

  • 30 locals trained on Raptor ID and Conservation Effort for the Flores Hawk-eagle in Mbeliling Landscape, resulting in establishing a team to preserve the Flores Hawk-eagle and habitat conservation efforts, and building relationship with local authorities

  • Established small-scale chicken farms for three community groups (total of 15 people directly benefiting) with each group receiving 50-70 chickens, totalling 200 chickens

  • Developed an action plan for the Flores Hawk-eagle in Mbeliling landscape and other protected forest region, based on the findings of this project
