Baseline surveys and conflict mitigation for the Flores Hawk-Eagle

© KONUPA

Project aims

  • Increase the population by safeguarding nests in two breeding sites that are outside protected areas

  • Provide supplementary food to improve breeding success and reduce conflict with people

  • Collect data on the species's ecology and biology

  • Mitigate human-eagle conflict in Wolojita

Results

  • Improved nest protection and breeding success inside and outside protected areas during critical breeding periods.

  • Established community-led nest patrol systems.

  • Strengthened local conservation capacity in nest monitoring and SMART patrols.

  • Generated baseline ecological and movement data across Flores and Sumbawa.

  • Documentation of home-range size, sex-specific ranging behaviour, and identification of critical habitat patches in human-dominated landscapes.

  • Documentation of breeding ecology of the species for future conservation planning.

  • Reduced human–eagle conflict and persecution risk through supplementary feeding, decreasing predation on domestic chickens.
