The emergency

Forest and peatland fires are threatening Sebangau National Park in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, home to an estimated 8,000 Critically Endangered Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus). Prolonged drought has fuelled fires along the park’s boundaries, with some already spreading into protected forest and damaging previously restored areas. Peat fires are difficult to extinguish because they can continue burning underground, threatening wildlife habitat and causing hazardous smoke. Urgent support is needed to sustain nine community firefighting teams working to contain the fires and prevent further destruction of critical orangutan habitat.
