The emergency

Established in 2013, the Turtle Rescue Center (TRC) in the Zeebin Forest Reserve near Bambwe, Mandalay Region rehabilitates freshwater turtles and tortoises confiscated from illegal wildlife traffickers. Assurance colonies of Big-headed Turtles, Asian Giant Brown Tortoises and Elongated Tortoises are maintained at the TRC.

This grant addresses a critical temporary funding gap for the project, compounded by economic impacts of the massive earthquake in late March 2025 that has resulted in rising prices of essentials such as food for the animals and fuel for generators needed to power pumps.

Results

Ensured the continued operation of the Turtle Rescue Center:

  • care for the assurance colonies of Big-headed Turtle, Asian Giant Brown Tortoise, Arakan Forest Turtle, and Elongated Tortoises with breeding success for the Big-headed Turtle, Asian Giant Brown Tortoise, and Elongated Tortoise assurance colonies within the grant period.

  • maintained high levels of security to safeguard the assurance colonies from theft at the Turtle Rescue Center.

  • maintenance and repair of existing infrastructure at the Turtle Rescue Center.
