Identify the distribution and status of Big-headed Turtle in the Lower Ing River Basin
Assess the local wildlife trade dynamics affecting the species’s conservation
Increase community awareness and engagement in turtle and tortoise conservation in the Lower Ing River Basin
Results
Survey of the Big-headed Turtle in the lower Ing River Basin with LRA staff and researchers, turtles expers and members of the local community leading to the confirmation of the presence of the species.
The setting up of three community-based Big-headed Turtle Conservation Zone, approved by local communities and monitored and patrolled by local communities.
Awareness raised through mass media communication in the form of News reports in mainstream and online media (more than 25 news reports).
Analysis of threats on the Big-headed Turtle including three main threats: (i) Poaching to consume Big-headed Turtles and for export to neighbouring countries, (ii) Changes in the ecosystem from agricultural land expansion, (iii) Forest fires in the dry season that destroy habitat.
