The emergency
Recent surveys have indicated that communities along the Ayeyarwady coastal zone have resumed bird hunting, partly in response to the deteriorating economic situation in the country. This includes in the Gulf of Mottama which supports a globally significant population of Spoon-billed Sandpiper.
If the hunting trend continues, this will have a devastating impact on the species' conservation status.
Urgent interventions focused on community engagement and community patrols are needed to reduce the threat of hunting.
Results
Provided trainings on birdwatching practices and patrolling to 30 members of the Local Conservation Groups.
Conducted an assessment on knowledge, altitude and practices of local people from 28 villages of five states/region along the Myanmar coast.
Writing and dissemination of a policy brief to related organisations and individuals.
Conducted monthly community-led patrolling and shorebirds population monitoring surveys from December 2024 to March 2025.
