The emergency

The Gulf of Mottama supports nearly half of the global population of the Spoon-billed Sandpipers, and hunting of these shorebirds is believed to have resumed partly in response to the deteriorating economic situation in the country. Several wintering sites in the area have not been surveyed for at least seven years. Reinitiating population surveys along with urgent, community-focused interventions such as community engagement and patrols is essential to reducing the threat of hunting.
