Local protection of the Philippine Crocodile, Isabela Oriole and Hawksbill Turtle in Community Conserved Areas in Northeast Luzon, Philippines

Project aims

Train 30 Community Conservation Area (CCA) rangers in environmental law enforcement, patrolling and monitoring of 8 Philippine Crocodile CCAs, 1 Isabela Oriole CCA and 2 Hawksbill Turtle CCAs

Results

  • Training of local government partners and community member on ASAP target species surveys, and patrols for the monitoring of illegal activities

  • Five Philippine Crocodile population monitoring surveys have been conducted and ten nests have been found (five nest with total of 32 hatchlings in 2021 and five with a total of 37 hatchlings in 2022).

  • Thirteen head-started juvenile Philippine Crocodiles were released back into the wild in 2022

  • Two Isabela Oriole surveys have been conducted with a count of 30 individuals in 2021 and 37 individuals in 2022. A nest and a juvenile Isabela Oriole were documented for the first time.

  • In 2021, 14 Green Sea Turtle nests were found and protected resulting in the hatching of 722 sea turtle hatchlings. In 2022, 16 nests were protected yielding more than 1,000 individuals.

  • One new Isabela Oriole location and one new Philippine Crocodile location have been discovered.

  • During the project period no poaching of target species was reported.

  • The declaration of 970 hectares of forest in Blue Waters as Wildlife Sanctuary, specifically because of the presence of the Isabela Oriole
