Conservation of the Critically Endangered Cameron Highland Sticky Frog (Kalophrynus yongi) in the Mount Brinchang Forest Reserve, Peninsular Malaysia

Project aims

  • Determine the distribution and microhabitat preferences of the species at Mount Brinchang

  • Identify and assess the extent of threats at Mount Brinchang

  • Produce engaging awareness materials to highlight the montane forest ecosystem of Mount Brinchang

Results

  • The Cameron Highland Sticky Frog was found to occur in mossy cloud forests within the montane zone of Gunung Brinchang at approximately 1950–1,990m above sea level, indicating a narrow ecological niche and strong habitat specificity.

  • It utilises small water bodies such as pitcher plants and tree stumps, as breeding sites within the forest ecosystem.

  • Increased human activities in the Gunung Brinchang area was identified as the primary pressure, and soil erosion and landslide events may further degrade suitable habitat.
