The emergency

Friends of Wildlife is the only conservation organisation that works in Thabaung and Pathein townships where the Arakan Forest Turtle is found. The organisation facilitates village-level conservation groups which conduct community-led patrols and awareness programmes.

Community reports have indicated that harvesting pressure has increased, compounded with political instability and limited livelihood options which compel more to depend on forest resources.

This funding will allow the efforts of the community-based conservation networks, at present the only viable measure to protect to the Turtle, to continue, and avoid the loss of hard-won connection and trust with the community.
