ASAP and Hempel Foundation announce new partnership to strengthen conservation organisations in Indonesia
January 2026
We’re delighted to announce a new partnership with the Hempel Foundation, whose support will help us strengthen the foundations of conservation in Indonesia.
Indonesia is a strategic priority for our work due to the high number of ASAP Species, a large proportion of which are found only within the country. Since 2023, we have had a dedicated Indonesia Programme Coordinator to drive forward support for organisations in the country. Now, it’s the first country of focus for our new Organisational Development programme – a long-term investment in strengthening local conservation organisations from the ground up.
While Indonesia is one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, it is also a place where many species face a high risk of extinction. Protecting this extraordinary biodiversity depends on the strength of local conservation organisations.

Through this new three-year funding relationship, ASAP will:
Support Organisational Development in Indonesia – equipping local conservation organisations with the skills and systems they need to thrive.
Create opportunities for collaboration – enabling conservation groups to connect, learn from each other and work together more effectively.
Ensure continuity of action – helping vital projects maintain momentum and safeguard threatened species through the Continuation Fund.

Based in Denmark, the Hempel Foundation works globally to promote quality education and to conserve tropical forests that are vital for protecting biodiversity. Indonesia is one of four priority regions under its biodiversity programme.
"We are incredibly proud to partner with ASAP in their vital mission to save Indonesia's most Critically Endangered species. This collaboration allows us to directly support local conservation leaders, supporting their efforts to bring species back from the brink of extinction and build a more resilient future for wildlife and people," says Georgina White, Biodiversity Manager at Hempel Foundation.

Nerissa Chao, ASAP Director, says:
"Protecting Indonesia’s extraordinary biodiversity depends on resilient local conservation organisations that can lead action on the ground. Yet these organisations are often underfunded and overstretched. We are excited to be partnering with the Hempel Foundation to invest in growing local conservation organisations in Indonesia to create lasting change for species at risk of extinction.”
This partnership is about investing in the people and organisations at the heart of conservation in Indonesia. By supporting resilient organisations, we lay the groundwork for long-term, locally led solutions that will protect species and ecosystems for generations to come.
