Conservation Actions

Lake Manguao, the only known habitat of this species, is within the Palawan Game Refuge and Bird Sanctuary and a Key Biodiversity Area (Biodiversity Management Bureau 2016). Research is needed to determine its population size and trend, life history, and ecology as well as to identify other plausible threats that may impact its population.

Location Information

This barb species is endemic to Lake Manguao in northern Palawan, Philippines (Day 1914, Matillano 2002). Lake Manguao has a maximum depth of 14 m and an area ranging from 6.4 km2 to 8 km2 (Matillano 2002). This species has an extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) of 28 km2 with a single location.

Population Information

Ichthyological surveys in Lake Manguao conducted in June and September 2002 recorded only 20 specimens ranging from 10.43-17.16 cm SL, with specimens from 11.53-17.16 cm were mostly gravid (Matillano 2002). The current population size and trend are unknown but, based on the surveys conducted by Matillano in 2002, it appears that this species is rare.

Threats

This species is threatened by the introduction of exotic species and habitat destruction due to mining operations, deforestation, and tourism-related activities, such as the building of cottages and pollution from sewage (Matillano 2002, Matillano 2011, Gonzales and Matillano 2014).
